1. ‘Abs are made in the kitchen’- Nutrition is paramount when it comes to getting a set of ‘Washboard’ abdominals. You need to be eating the right amount of calories and macronutrients to suit your lifestyle. Also you need to be eating nutrient dense foods to fuel your metabolism efficiently. Certain types of abdominal training will help develop your core region but you will not expose your abs without stripping down excess body-fat by eating healthily.
  2. ‘Lift weights to lose weight’- Lifting weights and building lean muscle is essential for fat burning. Generally 1 pound of lean muscle will burn between 30-50 calories a day. 1 pound of fat will burn around 2 calories. You do the maths!
  3. ‘ Move more’- Most people complicate things when it comes to cardiovascular training. The fitness industry has been saturated with different ways to do simple things which has left the average gym goer confused. If you want get leaner and lose body-fat, I would firstly recommend investing in a device such as a fitbit to track your movement and estimate your calorie output. If you start by aiming to hit the recommended amount of 10,000 steps per day consistently, you will get results providing your eating right. Keep it simple.
  4. ‘Eating junk food satisfies you for a minute, being fit satisfies you for life’- You don’t need me to tell you this but eliminate or significantly reduce junk food from your diet. The amount of empty calories you will find in junk food such as cakes and biscuits is astonishing. Not to mention Trans-fat which is a silent killer. Don’t get me wrong, every now and then it won’t hurt but keep your calorie intake controlled to optimise fat burning and general wellness.
  5. ‘Eat fat to lose fat’- Eating healthy fats such as oily fish, nuts, leafy greens etc will not only improve your health but also will assist weight loss. Saturated fat is good for the body providing you eat the right sources such as extra virgin coconut oil. Eliminate Trans fat altogether. Good fats will also help keep you fuller for longer and help to reduce sugar cravings which in turn will lead to a happier, healthier you.
